More Than Food….

Hershey, Nestlé, Popcorn and Buttermilk are more than just food items. They are our four new baby hens!

These two are Popcorn and Buttermilk, they are both Buff Orpington hens, well chicks.

And these two are Hershey and Nestle’, they are both Welsummers, and they are very camera shy! They kept hiding behind the two Buffs.

When we got the four of them we decided to see if my bantam hen, Nugget, would take care of them. So we put her in, and she looked at them and gently gave them each a peck on the head and then went about preening herself. So far so good! Until she noticed the two Welsummers were different. She picked out the two of them and started to get really rough with her pecking them. So needless to say, we had to pull her out and they all were much happier. :)

Our family can’t wait till spring when they start laying, especially the Welsummers. They lay dark, brown eggs, and sometimes they have speckles on them. :) So we will then have Brown, Green and Chocolate colored eggs.

Hi Sarah!
How fun! I never though about getting chicks this time of year ~ our 'chicken stores' only carry them in the spring!
Buff Orpingtons are my favorite ~ They are so friendly and sweet!
We got six chicks this spring ~ three Cuckoo Marans (one turned out to be a rooster! Now we have three roos ~ two Marans and one Araucana) and three Welsummers. Can hardly wait for those 'chocolate' eggs!
Have fun with those babies!

yeah only a few of our local feed stores carry chicks in fall. We decided to it in fall this year so we have eggs in spring. :) ours are all supposed to be hens, but you never know! :D

We have had the Buffs before and we really did like how sweet they were. :)
